Press Release

Photosynthesis LLC completes marketing research survey on digital images and art in homes.  Survey suggests that people shoot a lot of digital images but don’t do much with them other than upload them to social networking sites like Facebook.   Portland, Oregon, January 16th, 2010- Photosynthesis LLC, a Portland based Giclée company, announced today that it has completed and released results of a survey on digital images and art in the home.

Are household art and digital images important?

93% of respondents said that having art in their home that they enjoyed, was either very important or somewhat important. The remaining 7% said it was not very important. 96% of respondents said it was either somewhat or very important for them to capture their families' memories and experiences with photographic images.
I can conclude from this that people like to have images of their family and like to have art that they enjoy in their home. Our goal is to make their digital images into the art they enjoy.

What do people do with the images?

The majority of them use photo sharing web sites, as reflected in our research data 57% use photo sharing sites or put images up on Social networking sites like Facebook. The next biggest thing that people do with their digital images is order prints or print at home. Only 24% surveyed enlarge their images or get them framed as wall art. The current barriers that prevent people from doing wall art more often is that it takes too much time and costs too much money. People are looking for a quick and inexpensive way to get this done.

Level of interest and willingness to purchase:

Our primary research revealed that of those surveyed 93% are at a minimum somewhat interested (56 people somewhat and 18 very) in purchasing digital images on canvas. 59 people said they might order and 8 said they definitely would order. I learned anecdotally that the percentage of people that would Definitely purchase might be higher if they had a better idea of what images on canvas would look like. People need to get a good idea of look and feel before they would definitely purchase.

The types of images that people most likely to get reproduced on canvas:

Pictures of children (72%) and family (71%) were the number one and two choice, respectively, of people surveyed. These were followed by landscape, vacation, pets and hobbies. So as we had anticipated, focusing on families with children and pro photographers that shoot portraits of children and family will be where most of our effort goes.
Survey was conducted in July/August of 2009. Sent to 160 people and received 85 responses.
